Checkmate Alternative Defense Club

Who, What & Where: The Checkmate Alternative Defense Club is a private member organization for L.A. County residents(especially in high crime areas or high risk industries) and beyond to practice alternative (Less Lethal) self defense weapons use in controlled environments.

Why: Firearms and California have had a difficult relationship since the inception of the Black Panther Party. Subsequent legislation has been made to increase the difficulty of (a certain group of people) from lawfully possessing, carrying and using them. As of recent the state and its laws are becoming increasingly difficult to legally own and carry a firearm. Especially concealed. California Senate Bill 2 (backed by Governor Newsom) “precludes licensed gun carriers from having their firearms at public gatherings and special events, in parks and playgrounds, in stadiums, arenas and casinos, in medical facilities, religious institutions and financial institutions, on public transportation and in many parking areas, among other spaces.” Appealed and blocked for now, the current Governor is seeking to appeal this decision yet again.

Common knowledge of L.A. County that residents and frequent visitors share needs not to be identified in this brief as those circumstances have culminated to the following reasonable conclusion: All responsible citizens at higher risk of crime but especially perceived softer targets such as ladies, elders, the disabled, the more lucrative marks such as business owners, licensed carriers who may not travel freely between public spaces in the future and even reformed felons can benefit from learning the laws on carrying, concealing and using non lethal alternatives to protect themselves, their property(valued over $950 in CA 😒) or family lawfully and legally. Even more so in a dedicated group.

When & How: Now. In fact, immediately. This organization provides members with some of the tools and resources required to practice, increase proficiency, learn, be educated, and provide mutual support and aid to each other in all related and at times non-related incidents including but not limited to the general handling and safety protocol of weapons and equipment, marksmanship improvement, situational awareness, and the like. 

As the Organization grows, improvements in utilized space, equipment and variety of, increase of availability and other naturally occurring positive growths that organizations are prone to make are to be expected. Dues and fees are not collected and donations although accepted are not required. This Club is funded by the services provided to the members by the Director and staff. Membership is free, Sessions start at $300 a guided 2 hour session or $200 (unguided) available per appointment.
